Everyone starts their well-being (or healing) journey differently. There is no right or wrong way to begin. You may be inexplicably pulled towards learning more about mysticism and spirituality, drawn to holistic therapies that open up an awareness of yourself, or perhaps you suddenly find crystal's very interesting! Whatever way it manifests for you, trust the nudge you feel to create positive change in your life. If you aren't sure where to start, then a great place to begin is with gaining an understanding of your energy, and the people, thoughts and circumstances etc that can affect it. Becoming aware of any limiting beliefs, thought patterns and habits, and learning how to work with your energy is a valuable tool to possess.
But what does it actually mean to become aware of your energy, and how do you 'work' with it? It simply means noticing your personal 'energy givers' and 'energy takers' and taking steps to create the change you desire.
For example:
Energy Takers
Energy takers can leave you feeling anxious, stressed, tired, angry, frustrated, depressed, ungrounded.
- Holding limiting beliefs such as "I'm not good enough"
- Lack of boundaries - saying yes when you mean no or vice versa
- Spending time with people who leave you feeling drained (family included)
- Always putting other's needs before yours
- Gossiping, judging others
- Spending a lot of time on social media scrolling, watching too much news etc
- Comparing yourself to others
Energy Givers
Energy givers leave you feeling inspired, loved, happy, safe, content, calm, peaceful, relaxed, grounded.
- Doing things you truly enjoy
- Having, and keeping, boundaries
- Spending time with people who uplift and inspire you
- Taking good care of yourself
- Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature
- Expanding your knowledge by learning something new
- A healthier 'diet' with less news, social media, junk food, alcohol etc
- Exercise - moving your body always helps 'shake off' low energy
Throughout my own well-being journey, discovering the power of working with my energy has been one of my biggest lessons in learning to how to reduce fear, doubt and low confidence. And, by creating healthy boundaries and releasing the need to control, I feel freer than I ever have before.
A few easy steps to help you work with your energy:
- Recognise that everything is energy - thoughts, feelings, actions.
- Become more aware of how you feel when certain thoughts pop up.
- Take note of your response/reaction when around people or particular situations and ask yourself some questions such as:
- Does this person uplift me, or leave me feeling drained?
- Is this problem / challenge truly my responsibility?
- Is this thought / action helping me with my situation or making it worse?
- Am I saying yes because I genuinely want to, or out of obligation?
- Am I doing this because it brings me joy, or is it a habit?

By understanding what your personal energy 'givers' and 'takers' are, you gain the knowledge and power to begin consciously choosing who, and what, you give your time and energy to. It does take practice (and in my experience, a LOT of patience - not just with myself, but with others too!). But, the more you 'catch' yourself defaulting into fear, doubt or unhelpful thinking etc and the quicker you become at consciously choosing a better thought.
Let me know if you give it a try and the it's making a difference in your life.
If you have a better way to do things, then trust and listen to your intuition.
